1. Anxiety & Coping Skills

Key Resource:

  • Why Teens Get Anxious—and Ways to Help – Outlines common triggers of anxiety in youth and evidence-based techniques such as CBT and exposure therapy.

Support Group Discussion Starters:

  • What coping skills have you found most effective for managing anxiety?

  • How does your body tell you when anxiety is building?

  • Let’s try a group grounding exercise from the resource (e.g., 5-4-3-2-1 sensory check).

Activity Idea:

  • Create a “Coping Skills Toolbox”—a list of personalized strategies for each participant.

2. Grief & Loss

Key Resource:

  • How Children & Teens Grieve Across Ages – Explores how grief manifests in youth and ways to validate their emotions.

Support Group Discussion Starters:

  • What’s one thing that helped you feel supported in your grief journey?

  • How can rituals (e.g., writing letters or memory-sharing) help us honor our loved ones?

Activity Idea:

  • Group memory jar: each participant writes one positive memory or a word of encouragement to share.

3. Self-Esteem & Empowerment

Key Resource:

  • Practical Self-Esteem Building for Teens – Offers tools for cultivating self-worth and confidence.

Support Group Discussion Starters:

  • Share a time when you felt proud of yourself—big or small.

  • How do we silence the inner critic and replace it with positive self-talk?

Activity Idea:

  • “Affirmation Circle” – Each participant gives and receives affirming statements from others in the group.

4. Racial Identity & Resilience

Key Resource:

  • Ethnic-Racial Identity as Protective for Youth – Highlights how a strong racial or ethnic identity supports self-esteem and resilience.

Support Group Discussion Starters:

  • What are traditions or cultural strengths that make you proud of your heritage?

  • How have you overcome moments of bias or discrimination with resilience?

  • “Cultural Roots Collage” – A creative activity where participants create visual boards expressing pride in their identity.

5. LGBTQIA+ Peer Support
